This was a first for me. I approached this review as a complete stranger to the world of aromatherapy, my (very limited) experience stemming from various brands of shop-bought scented candles and extravagant bath bombs. In my head ‘aromatherapy’ has always been synonymous with mess, expense, and time; time spent pouring out drops of expensive oils from dark bottles.

It’s a relief and a pleasure to discover that Scentered is the exact opposite. The Scentered range is all about making the benefits of aromatherapy easy and accessible to women, especially those women juggling multiple roles and responsibilities who need aromatherapy most but don’t have the time or the energy to manoeuvre a vast and impractical market.

Specifically with business travel in mind, Scentered have put together a selection of products for Maiden Voyage to review.

The Ultimate Survival Kit

Features five of Scentered’s six fragrances: Escape, Sleep Well, Stress Less, Focus, and Love, plus it comes with a handy travel bag tucked away inside the box.

Ultimate Survival Kit bag

Escape – Oud, Frankincense and Sandalwood: A fragrance that evokes a warm sandy beach somewhere far away from the office! Especially nice to use when it’s a grey day and you are craving some sunshine.

Sleep Well – Lavender, Palmarosa and Ylang Ylang: Tried and tested 30 minutes before sleeping, this is a really elegant scent that sent me gently off into a dreamless sleep. If you struggle to unwind and don’t like the idea of sleep sprays or supplements, the balm is a perfect alternative.

Stress Less – Chamomile, Neroli and Mandarin: This is the balm I have used most, as it works in every situation. Fresh smelling, it’s the most understated balm, and particularly ideal if you don’t want a strong smell. Stress Less is always in my bag in case of emergencies.

Focus – Rosemary, Mint and Clary Sage: Bright, zingy, and may make your eyes pop if it’s the first time you’ve smelt it and it’s a slow afternoon. ‘Not recommended for use less than 2 hours before going to bed’ the box informs me, and I immediately know why. Lovely and refreshing (the mint especially), this got rid of my post-lunch cobwebs within about five minutes. I actually think this may just be my favourite of the set!

Love – Rose, Patchouli and Cedarwood: Subtle, warm, and extremely comforting. Made to ‘restore a sense of inner peace and balance’, Love is the aromatherapy equivalent of bread baking in the oven while you relax in a sunny window seat.

Price: £50 (a single balm is £14.50)

The Verdict: Ideal for aromatherapy on the move, the balms are compact, portable, and still pack a punch. Whether travelling upsets your body clock and makes it difficult to sleep, or jet lag is setting in and you’re expected to be alert for the next meeting, the Ultimate Survival Kit provides a natural and effective nudge to reset your mood. Carry them with your hand luggage to alleviate the lows of a long flight. Plus the bonus of a travel bag to keep them all together is a thoughtful addition to a gorgeous set.

Escape Travel Therapy Candle

Blending natural waxes and essential oils, Scentered candles boast ‘a clean burn and natural fragrance’ which I’m eager to test. I’ve never been a bath-and-candle kind of person, more because it seemed to take up too much time than anything else, but on this particular Sunday I make an exception. Before the sun has even set I have a full bath run, the Scentered Escape candle lit, and an open book waiting beside it.

Scentered Escape Travel Candle

Escape, much like its balm counterpart, is a heady blend of oud, frankincense and sandalwood; and also includes notes of cedarwood, amber, vanilla, patchouli, rose, birch, clove, and cinnamon. The description on the back of the candle’s dainty little box pronounces that you should light it ‘whenever you yearn for more exotic climes or crave a few precious moments for yourself’. Having just returned from the hot sun and spacious hotel of a holiday abroad to the grey skies of a typical English spring and a full house, I was craving both exotic climes and some peace before a return to the shrill peals of the Monday morning alarm.

Within minutes of the candle being lit, the bathroom smelt like a dream. The fragrance swiftly permeated every corner without becoming overbearing, and I settled into my bath with a renewed sense of calm. If it’s possible for a smell to be warm, then there really is no better way to describe the perfume of the Escape candle. It evokes a spice market under a hot desert sun, a warmth that seeps deep under your skin and settles comfortably into your bones. Every part of me was perfectly relaxed.

Price: £16

The Verdict: Perhaps the best testament to the Escape candle is that even once the flame has been blown out, the fragrance lingers. In fact, it didn’t fade until the bath water was cold and I surfaced with the reformed opinion that a candlelit bath on a Sunday was time extremely well spent, and something I would have to repeat the following weekend. Its size, suitably smaller than the Escape Home Therapy Candle, makes it ideal for taking on a trip away, and the box it comes in protects it well. Add a bit of luxury to your business trip with the Escape Travel Therapy Candle!
